22 march 2018 – World Water Day

Today is the World Water Day (http://worldwaterday.org/).

The 2018’s topic is Nature Based Solution for Water Preservation

Wetlands are often considered as a nature-based solution to climate change potential damages

Wetland ecosystems contribute a variety valuable ecosystem services (recreation, greenhouse gas sequestration, contaminant retention, coastal protection, groundwater level and soil moisture regulation, flood regulation and biodiversity support) and play an important role to address pollution, land and water degradation; in addition, wetlands provide resource for local livelihoods and potential for contribution to accomplishing water related sustainable goals and targets.

Wetland restoration could provide a solution for:

  • water supply regulation (including drought mitigation); water quality regulation through their role in water purification, biological control, water temperature control;
  • moderation of extreme events due to their action in the riverine flood control.

The MARISTANIS Project, financed by MAVA Foundation, and managed by MEDSEA Foundation aims at promoting wetlands restoration and preservation to promote better water management in the West Sardinian coastal area, especially suffering from climate change.
