Four ideas for the future of the sea: the Attitude Ocean Award has its winners

The Covid-19 emergency did not prevent over 450 pupils from 23 Sardinian middle school classes from participating to the "Attitudide Ocean Award", a prize born from the collaboration between the MEDSEA Foundation and COR36, organizer of the PRADA Cup - regattas of selection for the Challengers of the 36th America's Cup. The prize, initially linked to the Cagliari stage of the World Series, later canceled due to the quarantine, has had the goal to promote a path of awareness on the issues of the sustainable use of the sea.

“Unfortunately, we could not celebrate the great commitment shown by the pupils as they deserved, in the company of the Prada team and surrounded by the magnificent atmosphere of the regatta. But we still managed to achieve our main goal, involving schools and pupils in a new approach on sea protection", says Piera Pala, a founding member of the MEDSEA Foundation involved in organizing the award.

All the steps that led to the evaluation of the works were coordinated by the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team. The students were able to choose among four categories to develop their creativity: artistic, digital, planning and narrative. Four sections to stimulate a new thought on environmental issues and responsibility, to involve even the youngest in the search for solutions aimed at reducing human impacts on the coastal and marine areas.

In the artistic section were the 21 students of the I A of the State Comprehensive School "Satta-Spano-De Amicis" in Cagliari (plexus "Giuseppe Manno") to win. "The expressive variety and the strong awareness reached on the subjects are very appreciable. This also suggests to insist in their commitment in the next year”. So the jury judged the video and accompanying report produced by the class.

The II E of the "C.Nivola" of Capoterra was instead awarded the digital section thanks to "an interactive digital product in virtual reality that guides the user in a nice and effective way to explore concepts and information on the sea protection issues. The clever use of new technologies is highly appreciated. The digital project deserves to be further developed”.

"Small is good", elaborated by II I of the "Ugo Foscolo" of Cagliari has prevailed in the planning section. The project envisaged the setting up of a "demonstration bench", to be located at the city's civic markets and intended to educate responsible consumption of fish and other marine products. This in order to encourage customers to purchase small-sized fish species and, in general, those that are less threatened. “The project is excellently designed, it is feasible and effective. It manages to connect the need to inform and raise awareness with the enhancement of local traditions and economy", commented the experts of Luna Rossa jury.

A dim future dominated by the environment devastated by the invasion of plastics and by climate change has won the narrative section. The story-tellers are those of the III A of the National Boarding School of Cagliari "Vittorio Emanuele II". "A melancholy story that has the merit of shaking the consciences of readers by painting, in convincing fashion, a devastating scenario that we all have a duty to prevent from being realized".

"It is great news, and it well represents the interest of pupils and teachers for the environmental themes, even in a difficult period like the one we are living in", explains Gisella Caddeo, head teacher of the "Ugo Foscolo" school. “The school remained a landmark even during the quarantine, the bond to everyday life and to the outside world. The teachers of the schools involved have shown that they know how to gather and put to good use such beautiful occasions like the Attitude Ocean prize, and the requests that come from the boys, with a true pedagogical spirit".

Each participating class will receive the “Ambassadors of the Sea” certificate. The winning classes will receive, in addition to the certificate, a book about the twenty years of history of Luna Rossa at sea, and the set with the "Attitude Ocean" logo consisting of bags, pencils and water bottles.
