Two Marine Managed Areas in Sao Tomè

Funder: Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe - Unité de Gestion du PAPAC

Years: 2015 - 2016

Project description:

Technical assistance and feasibility study for the creation of pilot marine areas of participatory management (Marine Managed Areas) on the island of Sao Tome and on the island of Principe, a total marine surface of about 2,000 hectares

The objective of the assignment concerns the realization of a feasibility study for the creation of two Marine Managed Areas: one is located in the Island of Príncipe, around the islet of Bombom, and the other one in the southern area of the island of São Tomé, around the rocks of Sete Pedras.
The goal beyond the creation of these protected areas is to preserve the productivity of their ecosystems and preserve the essential ecological processes by controlling the activities that could compromise the functionality or damage the natural environment.
The bibliographic analysis and the on-site visit allows to define the general and specific objectives for each pilot area, size and regulations related to each zone of protection and management defined (allowed and restricted uses, mitigation measures of uses, etc.)
The study also describes how the management of marine resources and the maintenance of biodiversity levels must be achieved through the involvement of local populations, an adequate level of control and monitoring and the application of a management system that allows to carry out the most suitable actions.
