Assessing climate impacts on gender equality in coastal communities

Sustainable Development Goals:

This project is one of the priority actions of the GEF MedProgramme, which aims to reduce the major transboundary environmental impacts affecting the Mediterranean Sea and its coastal areas, while strengthening climate resilience and water security and improving the health and livelihoods of coastal populations.

The gender-sensitive climate risk assessment aims to promote gender sensitivity in climate change adaptation and to provide a platform for building coastal resilience to climate change in a sustainable and inclusive manner. The assessment is going to include gender analyses, vulnerability assessment and gender-disaggregated information systems, and comprehensive gender guidelines to promote gender sensitivity in climate change adaptation. Participatory processes will guarantee the inclusion of local knowledge and context specificity, and the active involvement of all relevant stakeholders in the elaboration of the TTAH Coastal Plan.

Main activities:
  • identifying and assessing existing climate risk assessments in Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Region, Morocco , including gender assessments;
  • gender-sensitive climate risk assessment considering both current and future scenarios;
  • downscaling/updating/complementing existing assessments with relevant data;
  • building stakeholders’ capacities to use climate risk assessments for development planning in coastal areas.
