Climate coastal risk analysis and development of local-scale risk management protocol

CRESO aims to strengthen the resilience of Mediterranean coastal communities by developing advanced knowledge and innovative tools to assess risks and impacts linked to climate change and extreme marine events. The project analyses both the physical drivers—sea level rise, coastal erosion and storm surges—and the socio-economic and environmental effects on communities and ecosystems. 

The ultimate goal is to provide shared recommendations and concrete adaptation and mitigation solutions for coastal-zone management, fully aligned with European climate and resilience strategies.

Key project outputs 

Through the development of future scenarios for 2050 and 2100, CRESO will deliver: 

  • a public database of meteo-marine data and maps of potentially flood-prone coastal areas; 
  • a dataset on the socio-economic and environmental impacts associated with different scenarios, including the “no-action” option; 
  • a joint interregional document with operational recommendations for local and regional authorities; 
  • community-engagement actions (round tables, public events, consultations) to integrate local needs, knowledge and adaptation practices. 

MEDSEA’s role 

Building on its long-standing experience in international climate-adaptation and coastal-management projects, the MEDSEA Foundation will: 

a) lead the analysis of scientific results and risk maps and translate them into practical coastal-risk reduction protocols tailored to each pilot site; 
b) contribute to the assessment of impacts on marine ecosystems and to the development of integrated adaptation strategies; 
c) coordinate communication and dissemination activities, involving local communities, schools, businesses and associations; 
d) promote outreach and awareness-raising events to increase understanding of climate adaptation and nature-based solutions.

Total budget: € 1,802,325.99 (ERDF contribution: €1,441,860.78)
