WHAT IS WORLD WETLANDS DAY?

Foto Nieddittas / Lipu
Celebrated annually on February 2, World Wetlands Day raises awareness about the importance of wetlands for the planet and humanity. It marks the anniversary of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971.
The theme for 2025, "Protecting wetlands for our common future", emphasizes the urgency of preserving these ecosystems, which are critical for climate change mitigation, CO2 storage, and flood water absorption. Sardinia, with its 9 RAMSAR sites covering 17% of Italy’s wetland area, stands out as a leader in wetland conservation efforts.
Over 64% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded or lost in the past century. World Wetlands Day is a call to action for their protection, underscoring their environmental, economic, and cultural importance.
