From September 25 to October 15, Cagliari will host the Sardinia Sailing Cup, an international sailing event that this year brings together five world championships (www.sardiniasailingcup.it) and several foil classes, including Formula Wing, Nacra 17, 49er, 49er FX, Waszp, iQFOiL, Wingfoil, Formula Kite and Para Sailing (Hansa 303); around 600 athletes will take to the waters of Cagliari to compete for top honors. As a scientific partner, the MEDSEA Foundation will accompany the sporting competition with a program of events dedicated to marine knowledge and protection, involving schools, citizens, and experts across three themed days.
All meetings will take place in the Amphitheatre of the Sardinia Sailing Cup Village in Marina Piccola, the vibrant heart of the event.
1st Stage – Defending the Coasts: Balance Between Nature and Communities
Thursday, September 25 – Special Mediterranean Coast Day with MEDSEA
The day opens at 10:00 with At the Forefront, a keynote by Piera Pala, President of the MEDSEA Foundation, on the challenges of climate change in the Mediterranean. At 10:30, a dialogue with Marine Protected Areasand the Regional Department for Environmental Protection follows, featuring Silvia Serra (RAS Ambiente Valeria Masala (Capo Carbonara MPA director) and Leonardo Lutzoni (Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo MPA director), moderated by journalist Giulia Eremita from MEDSEA Foundation. Images from the international Blue4All Photo Contest dedicated to marine protection will be projected on the big screen.
At the same time, from 10:00 to 12:00, fifth-grade students from Up School Cagliari will take part in a beach workshop: a guided visit to the coastal ecosystem and a creative installation illustrating dunes, sea, and sky. Activity curated by Alessandro Torrisi / GluDaAmare and MEDSEA.
2nd Stage – A Sea Without Plastic
Thursday, October 9
At 10:00, Vania Statzu, environmental economist, and Michela Congiu, marine biologist, both from MEDSEA, introduce the morning with the keynote The Journey of a Plastic Bottle at Sea. At 10:30, a discussion follows with “plastic fighters” engaged in concrete clean-up and awareness-raising actions: Giorgio Spiga (Restituiti dal mare), Carola Farci (Rebelterra), Elisa Mocci (Regional Network for Marine Fauna Conservation) Luisa Giua Marassi - Municipal Department for the Environment of the City of Cagliari, Claudia Zuncheddu - Isde Sardegna a and Moreno Pisano (Plastron, Interreg PO Italy–France Maritime). Moderation by journalist Luca Foschi of the MEDSEA Foundation.
From 10:00, visitors can explore the exhibition Restituiti dal Mare – Archeology of the Present curated by Giorgio Spiga. Meanwhile, fifth-grade students from Up School will join the activity Leave Only Footprints, Create from Recycling: a quiz to recognize stranded materials, a beach clean-up, and a creative recycling workshop led by Maria Pala / MEDSEA.
3rd Stage – The Living Sea: Saving Posidonia and Biodiversity
Wednesday, October 15
At 10:00, Francesca Frau, MEDSEA’s marine project manager, opens with the talk The Power of Posidonia: Marine Biodiversity, Resilience and Coastal Defense. At 10:30, researchers Patrizia Stipcich (University of Naples) and Alessandro Cau (University of Cagliari) will discuss the role of science and communities in protecting biodiversity.
Together with Coco Francavilla, presenting the MusicForTheSea.org project with a live performance that blends electronic music and ocean sounds, recognized by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science program
Moderation by journalist Luca Foschi.
From 10:00 to 12:00, fourth- and fifth-grade students from I Pini School will join the activity Discovering the Underwater Forest: observing Posidonia in the field and creating the installation A Day Under the Sea, led by Maria Pala / MEDSEA.
Now in its third edition, the Sardinia Sailing Cup 2025 is one of the premier international sailing events in Sardinia. Organized by the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) in collaboration with FIV’s Third Zone, the event is promoted and funded by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia.
