Ponds, lagoons, lakes, rivers and peatlands.
If you are unsure about what can be defined as a wetland, the Ramsar Convention comes to the rescue:
A wetland is an area where water is the dominant element and shapes the soil, vegetation, fauna and ecological processes. It may be permanently or temporarily flooded, with fresh, brackish or salt water, still or flowing.
The world of coastal wetlands is vast and complex, deeply intertwined with the history and identity of territories, with the life of communities, and with our roots.
In Sardinia, once again this year, this natural and cultural heritage takes centre stage with World Wetlands Day – Sardinia Edition, from 31 January to 1 March 2026: a whole month of distributed initiatives dedicated to discovering and enhancing the island’s wetlands and their cultural and identity heritage – the theme of this year’s edition.
Explore these precious ecosystems with us in February, choose one or more events and share your experience using the hashtags #WWDSardegna #CelebratingWetlands on your favourite social media channels.

WHY WORLD WETLANDS DAY IN SARDINIA

World Wetlands Day, celebrated every year on 2 February, in Sardinia extends over more than a month: from the last week of January until the end of February, with dozens of events including walks, excursions, laboratories, workshops, contests and on-the-ground stewardship actions.
A calendar that crosses ponds and lagoons, 9 of which are recognised as Ramsar sites of international importance, covering more than 13,000 hectares of land permanently or temporarily covered by water, fundamental for the ecological balance of the Mediterranean and for local economies and cultures.
This edition highlights not only the environmental value of wetlands, but also the cultural heritage that arises from them: traditional practices, identity-based productions, local knowledge, and landscapes shaped by the historical relationship between communities and water.
Fondazione MEDSEA collects and shares stories, images and impressions from Sardinian wetlands, giving voice to territories and to the people who live them.
Note: events are proposed and organised by the indicated partners. MEDSEA is not responsible for the direct organisation of activities. All events are subject to change; participants are advised to contact organisers for updated information and confirmation.
