Educating for the Environment” kicks off in Alghero: MEDSEA meets IIS Roth students for the first circular economy session

The educational journey of the project "Educating for the Environment: Schools and Businesses for a Circular Sardinia" has officially begun. The initiative, conceived and promoted by Associazione Il Triangolo with organizational support from Primaidea, is funded by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia. The project involves four upper secondary schools across Sardinia and includes a series of seminars focused on environmental education and sustainable development, with particular attention to innovative applications of the circular economy.

The first session took place at the Angelo Roth Institute of Higher Education in Alghero, where the MEDSEA Foundation engaged third-year students in a seminar that combined theoretical reflection with real-world examples to introduce the core principles of the circular economy and illustrate its potential through concrete applications.

Representing MEDSEA were Davide Porta, eco-designer, and Mattia Soi, project manager, who guided the session through a dynamic mix of insights and dialogue.

During the meeting, students actively participated in interactive discussions, starting from a critical analysis of the linear economic model and exploring the opportunities offered by more resilient, equitable, and sustainable circular approaches. The discussion also addressed the links between finite resources, the climate crisis, and the need for a systemic shift, highlighting the interplay between economic theory, individual behavior, and collective choices.

A key part of the session was dedicated to showcasing projects developed by MEDSEA in Sardinia, with a focus on environmental engineering, eco-design, and the creative reuse of materials. The Foundation also highlighted ongoing collaborations with local stakeholders and Mediterranean partners committed to ecological and circular transition goals.

Among the featured initiatives were projects funded by the Interreg Italy-France Maritime Programme, including:

  • GRRinPORT2, promoting circular management of port waste and sediments through innovative technologies and recovery strategies

  • PLASTRON, focused on the prevention and removal of beached plastics and the promotion of circular economy practices along Mediterranean coastlines

The overarching goal of the initiative is to provide students with the knowledge and tools to understand contemporary environmental challenges and inspire greater awareness of their role in shaping more sustainable models of life, production, and consumption.

The next session in the circular economy education tour will take place on May 16 2025 at the IANAS Institute in Tortolì.
